POSITION OVERVIEW
The Violence Prevention Program Coordinator primarily focuses on initiatives funded by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ Sexual Violence Prevention (SVP) grant. These initiatives include: the Gender Equity Reading Initiative (GERI); prevention curriculum facilitation and policy technical assistance for youth-serving organizations; and Young Leaders Against Violence (YLAV).
Gender Equity Reading Initiative: utilizes developmentally-appropriate literature and accompanying reading guides to promote healthy social norms and violence prevention (gerigr.org). The GERI is a multilingual program, with 100% of program materials and at least 50% of the curated books available in English and Spanish.
Curriculum facilitation and policy technical assistance: Safe Haven is currently partnering with AYA Youth Collective and Bethany’s Refugee and Immigrant Services to deliver prevention curriculum and enhance agency policy/protocol to enhance supportive environments for youth program participants
Young Leaders Against Violence: provide co-mentorship and support for the agency’s youth-led group of area high schoolers committed to preventing violence in their communities
ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW
Safe Haven Ministries—a nonprofit organization located in Grand Rapids, Michigan—believes in a multi-faceted approach to serving victims/survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking and exploitation, while also working to prevent these types of violence in our community. Safe Haven offers comprehensive intervention services, including: confidential emergency shelter; transitional and rapid re-housing; psycho-educational support groups; individual case management and advocacy; children and youth support services; crisis services; and mobile advocacy; and primary prevention training and outreach for the entire community.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES (Essential Functions)
-Research, design and facilitate trainings that align with SVP program goals
-Provide technical assistance to youth-serving SVP partners with the goal of strengthening policies and protective factors against sexual violence perpetration
-Develop and implement violence prevention curriculum for youth participants of SVP partnering organizations (As You Are Youth Collective and Bethany Refugee); develop a model for youth co-facilitation of violence prevention curriculum; given the youth program participants of our current partnerships, curriculum can be facilitated in English or Spanish, while interpretation services are used for youth that speak additional languages.
-Provide program design, implementation and mentorship to Young Leaders Against Violence, a youth-led violence prevention initiative; this group currently meets during the academic year on Wednesday evenings.
-Coordinate all programmatic components of the Gender Equity Reading Initiative, including program design and implementation with the program’s primary partner, the Grand Rapids Public Library and SPARK Research for Social Change at Michigan State University.
-Maintain inventory of GERI books and resources, prep materials for distribution, and lead various GERI distribution events (i.e. Storytime in the Park, summer festivals, etc.)
-Continue to foster partnerships within Latinx and Hispanic Communities with the goal of growing the reach and engagement of GERI in these communities.
-In close partnership with SPARK Research for Social Change and Grand Rapids Public Library, engage in rigorous process and outcomes evaluation of the Gender Equity Reading Initiative
-Foster relationships and create shared spaces for community partners and stakeholders to actively work towards the mutual goal of preventing sexual and domestic violence
-Ensure that program activities, outputs, and outcomes are clearly defined and assessed on a continual basis
-Engage in ongoing data collection and evaluation as it relates to sexual violence prevention and program activities
-Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings, individual supervisions, staff in-services, as well as county and state-wide workgroups and teams related to the SVP grant
-Observe professional confidentiality; protect the rights of clients and their families and observe the Safe Haven Ministries Code of Ethics at all times
-Seek and solicit opportunities for personal and professional growth
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED OR PREFERRED
-Strong understanding of a public health approach to sexual violence prevention
-At least two years’ experience within the gender-based violence field, or related social change/justice fields
-Knowledge of and/or experience working with gender and sexual minority populations
-Demonstrated success engaging in power sharing with adult and youth populations
-Experience utilizing an intersectional framework to social justice issues
-Demonstrated understanding and success engaging in community organizing
-Excellent facilitation skills
-Excellent written communications skills, including an ability to write about nuanced and complex subjects
-Ability to work independently
-Flexibility in schedule is required; this position requires evenings and some weekends to accommodate training requests
