GRAPHIC DESIGNER
October 2021
Now in our 91st season, the Grand Rapids Symphony is Michigan’s second largest performing arts organization. We serve more than 200,000 people annually through our concerts in DeVos Performance Hall, community performances, educational programs, and in our collaborations with the Grand Rapids Ballet and Opera Grand Rapids. Delivering great music is the Symphony’s mission and the constant driver behind our patron relations strategies. The ability to communicate the many ways the Symphony serves our West Michigan community is essential to our success!
We are seeking a Graphic Designer to design and produce all GRS collaterals, advertisements, web graphics, and a myriad of other creative projects. This person needs to be self-directed but know how to work as part of a team and be responsive to feedback. We work in a fast-paced environment and turn-around time needs to be quick. Designers should have experience in both print and electronic media.
This position is part of the team for planning and implementation of GRS marketing, advertising, and public relations activities, and will work with other departments to fulfill all our organizational design needs. This position works closely with the Digital Marketing Manager to ensure consistent web design and electronic communications standards. You will be the gatekeeper of our brand and style and will report to the Senior Marketing Manager. The position is salaried with accompanying benefits.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES WOULD BE …
• You’d be an important part of our team as we work together to come up with art direction for each season, as well as each concert series and individual concert as well—your voice will be heard each step of the way as we choose season, series and concert titles, taglines, positioning statements and more!
• You’d create graphics for our program book as well as performance hall graphics and signage that will enhance concert experience for our patrons
• You’d design electronic communications such as social media graphics, email advertisements, website banners, and much more
• You’d design all print communications such as newspaper and magazine advertisements, direct mail pieces, brochures, postcards, programs, etc.
• You’d maintain our media library that includes logos, program information, artist photos and bios, etc.
• You’d coordinate with several graphics’ vendors and the print/mail house
• You’d assist with concert front of house operations including greeting and ushering patrons, setting up lobby, etc.
• Full COVID-19 vaccination is required
TO WORK WITH US, YOU SHOULD …
• Be a master of Adobe Creative Cloud as well as office software like MS Office
• Understand social media and digital advertising better than anyone you know!
• Though you’d be our graphic design expert, you’d be working in a close team environment, so you should be able to be positive, flexible, and to value and easily incorporate your colleague’s feedback to your work
• Have excellent verbal and written communication skills, but most importantly a keen eye for detail and great design taste
• Demonstrate strong organizational skills and ability to work independently while handling multiple tasks
• Be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
• Have the ability to work nights and weekends as needed
• Have demonstrated interest in Classical Music—you don’t need to know everything about it! We have plenty of music nerds on our staff!
WHAT YOU’D GET …
• When you join our team, you become part of our family
• We offer a robust compensation and benefits package that includes health and dental insurance, PTO and 401k.
• Two complimentary tickets to most Symphony concerts
